Functional Foods And Miracle Nutrients
I have used functional foods and miracle nutrients (phytonutrients) as a foundation of my preventative and optimal health strategy for many years.
While there is no internationally agreed definition of functional foods I think this is a good summary:
“Functional foods contain biologically active ingredients associated with physiological health benefits for preventing and managing chronic diseases”
Examples of these biologically active ingredients (phytonutrients) are phenolics, alkaloids, organosulfur compounds, phytosterols and carotenoids.
Phytonutrients stimulate enzymes that help the body get rid of toxins, promote healthy estrogen metabolism, boost the immune system, improve cardiovascular health as well as stimulate the death of cancer cells.
Butyrate is a functionally versatile molecule that is produced in our gut by fermentation of dietary fibre – and is known in naturopathic circles as a miracle nutrient. Butyrate may be an important protective agent in colon cancer. Butyrate modulates the gut microbiota and is a key regulator in the positive feedback loop between the gut microbiome and epithelial metabolism.
A regular consumption of functional foods and their innate phytonutrients may be associated with enhanced antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity (think healthy ageing!)
Combining exercise with functional food consumption can offer even more protective benefits.
