The Mayu Swirl: The Nicest Thing On My Kitchen Bench
Most of what I sell lives in a cupboard or the fridge. The Mayu Swirl is the exception. It sits out on the bench, it gets looked at, and it is the thing visitors ask about before they ask about anything else.
I have had mine for over a year now and it lives on a part of my kitchen bench that gets the lovely morning sun.
What it is
A 1.5L borosilicate glass carafe that sits on a hand-made porcelain base. Inside the carafe is a small removable disc called an impeller, with a magnet in it. The base holds a motor and a matching magnet. Put the full carafe down and a weight sensor starts the motor, the two magnets couple, the impeller spins, and the water forms a vortex. It is quietly hypnotic.
The base is rechargeable and runs cordlessly for up to seven hours, so it can move to the dining table or out to the deck. Nothing plastic touches your water at any point. There is a two year warranty against manufacturing faults.
The bases come in three colourways - Earth, Graystone, Dolomite - and because each one is finished by hand, no two are quite the same.
Why I like it
Water tastes better out of it. Swirling drives off the dissolved gases that give tap water its flat, faintly chemical edge, and what you pour is softer and fresher. (If you already filter - you might enjoy using the glass topper)
But the honest reason is simpler than that. A beautiful thing on the bench gets used. Water that is sitting there, moving, catching the light, is water that gets poured. Children in particular are fascinated by it, which is not the worst way to get a glass of water into someone.
It is also just a well made object. Glass and porcelain, no plastic, no gimmick, made to sit out rather than be hidden away.

Common questions
How long do I run it for? Around seven minutes is the usual suggestion. Longer does no harm, and plenty of people simply leave it going.
Where does it fit if I already filter my water? Last. Filter or purify first, then pour the clean water into the Swirl. Think of it as the finishing step rather than a replacement for your filter.
Can I put it in the dishwasher? The glass carafe, yes. The small disc inside needs washing by hand. I wash my carafe n the sink and finish off with a mild vinegar/water rinse. I find that keeps mine sparkling clean.
How often should I clean it? Once a week (or once a fortnight if you use less or have a small family) with warm water and dish soap, and more often if you add minerals or fruit. Let everything dry upside down so no moisture is left sitting.
Which base should I choose? Whichever one suits your kitchen. They are identical apart from the finish, and each is hand made, so yours will have its own character.
Can I take it away with me? Yes. Charge the base and it runs cordlessly, so it travels well.
